Released together with Warner Classics, Sinfonia Varsovia Orchestra’s new album is a musical birthday gift for Maestro Krzysztof Penderecki – the Orchestra’s artistic director. On the album, he conducts both Antonín Dvořák’s heroically elegiac 7th Symphony in D minor Op.70 (1885) and one of his own works – the 2nd Symphony “Christmas” (1980).

“The first performance in Poland of Krzysztof Penderecki’s Symphony No. 2 (commissioned by Zubin Mehta and performed for the first time in May of 1980 by the New York Philharmonic) during the Warsaw Autumn Festival in 1981 caused some consternation among the audience and critics. Here was a composer who was considered the very icon of Polish and international avant-garde from the very outset of his career, presenting a work looking so determinedly towards the past, keeping close to traditional (albeit significantly extended) tonality and, above all, full of unchecked, neo-romantic expression.” (Piotr Maculewicz)

Placing Penderecki’s 2nd Symphony “Christmas” side by side with Dvořák’s 7th Symphony in D minor on one album provides a fascinating insight into the evolution of the Slavic composing tradition. Both Penderecki and Dvořák consciously draw on the legacies of their national music, while engaging in a creative dialogue with the accomplishments of contemporary times. Thus, their music achieves an extraordinary culture-forming value while affecting the listener emotionally and directly.
