MAKSYMIUK | Sinfonia Varsovia – a history of an unusual artistic friendship written down in music
Release date: 29.01.2016
The appearance of the unparalleled talent of Jerzy Maksymiuk on our musical landscape and the ensuing artistic phenomenon that bears the name of the Polish Chamber Orchestra was a sui generis earthquake for all of us – writes Adam Rozlach in the liner notes.
The latest album: MAKSYMIUK | Sinfonia Varsovia is the quintessence of the style and repertoire of the charismatic Maestro leading his beloved orchestra, whose international renown he helped create and to which he is strongly attached to this day.
The double album showcases both historical recordings which have undergone careful remastering and new interpretations recorded in 2015. The works to appear on the album were selected by Maestro Maksymiuk himself. The CDs include compositions by Mozart, Bach, Rossini, as well as Debussy, Bartók and Stravinsky. Works by Polish composers have always been an important part of Jerzy Maksymiuk’s repertoire, so this anniversary collection would not be complete without them. Alongside works by Grażyna Bacewicz, Tadeusz Baird and Adam Jarzębski is a composition by the Maestro himself (Vers per archi).
The album is a sentimental journey back to the time when Jerzy Maksymiuk’s chamber players drenched audiences attending their first concerts with fireworks of technique and artistry hitherto unseen in Polish musical performance. It is also a record documenting the famous conductor’s work with his beloved orchestra today. The album is also a valuable compendium which sets out the notable landmarks in the history of one of the most extraordinary musical friendships on the Polish music scene.
Janusz Marynowski, director of the Sinfonia Varsovia Orchestra: A proposal to release this album seemed to us the most beautiful gift possible for our friend – Jerzy Maksymiuk, who will be celebrating his 80th birthday in 2016. In this way the orchestra wanted to thank him for several decades of musical cooperation. The album is also a calling card for our future projects together, including an anniversary concert devoted to the Maestro, which will take place at the National Philharmonic concert hall on 9 April 2016.
