Born in Cracow, Barnaba Poprawski completed his education in Stuttgart in the class of Professor Andra Darzins and Professor Roland Glassl and in Vienna in the class of Professor Hans-Peter Ochsenhofer (with honours).
From 2007 to 2014 Poprawski worked with the orchestra of the Vienna State Opera and with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, performing with both in major concert halls in many countries in Europe, as well as in the United States, Canada and in the Middle East. He has also made many recordings. During this time Barnaba has been acquiring orchestral performance experience, playing with many renowned conductors and soloists, including Zubin Mehta, Lorin Maazel, sir Simon Rattle, Riccardo Muti, Daniele Gatti, Christian Thielemann, Valery Gergiev, Pierre Boulez, Daniel Harding, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Seiji Ozawa, Daniel Barenboim, Anna Netrebko, Placido Domingo, Christian Tetzlaff, Julian Rachlin, Yo-Yo Ma, Hilary Hahn and Lang Lang.
In 2014-2018 Barnaba was a member of the Mozarteum Orchestra in Salzburg. He has also appeared as guest viola leader in the Tiroler Sinfonieorchester in Innsbruck and in the Orquestra da la Comunitat Valenciana in Spain (on an invitation from Maestro Zubin Mehta).
In 2011 he joined the Wiener Klangkommune chamber ensemble, with which he performs works for unusual combinations of instruments. He has performed as a chamber musician in, among others, the Vienna Musikverein, Brucknerhaus in Linz, Stiftung Mozarteum in Salzburg and in Tokyo and Asahikawa in Japan. Playing in a string quartet, Poprawski developed his skills under the tutelage of members of the Alban Berg Quartett, Quatour Ebene and Heinrich Schiff.
A dedicated performer of contemporary music, Barnaba Poprawski was a long-time member of Ensemble XX Jahrhundert. He has also worked together with Klangforum Wien.
In 2018, together with Marcin Osiak, he recorded an album of five hitherto unknown duets for violin and viola by 18th century composer Joseph Hafeneder. This is the first recording of these works in the world.
Barnaba Poprawski’s viola is an instrument made to order in 2014 in Vienna by Matthieu Devuyst.
He joined the Sinfonia Varsovia Orchestra in 2018.
