“The Music of the City, or a Passing Strange Concert”
meetings for organised groups – students of post-middle schools;
short concerts and a workshop performance with involvement of the audience
16-19 November 2015

The project is dedicated to Warsaw’s youth, 2nd year high school students and music teachers.

The new activity provides for an unusual musical offering for a young audience – 2nd year high school students, residents of Warsaw’s Praga district. The music presented will range from the traditional to the ultra-modern. The highlight of each concert will be the performance of a work illustrated by a visualisation (“Music of the City”) with the involvement of the audience. During the concerts there will be a performance which will enable the audience to find out about and become familiar with modern composition techniques and with various types of contemporary music notation.

The involvement of a high-class soprano and performer in one person guarantees a high artistic level of the events. In the course of 5 meetings nearly 450 students and teachers of Warsaw’s high schools will have a unique opportunity to listen to excellent renditions of staples from the music of the 20th and 21st centuries, and to become involved in the composition of their own work based on a visualisation of contemporary life in the capital.

Each concert will consist of two parts. In the first, soprano Eliza Szulińska will sing works with the accompaniment of a piano. In the second, the singer will lead a performance with the involvement of the audience which will prepare them for a joint performance of the final composition. Thus, each participant becomes a musician, taking an active part in the concert, and in particular in the first performance of the final work, composed for the purposes of the project, titled “The Music of the City”. The work will be performed simultaneously with a visualisation under the same title.

The first part of the concert will feature works by Maciej Małecki. These are songs originally intended for the theatre. Here, they have been transposed and expanded especially for Eliza Szulińska. The compositions are traditionally tonal and illustrative in nature. They have been written to words by the classics. The songs’ appeal results in their capacity to be appreciated by both the connoisseur and by the inexperienced listener.

The works performed are:

- “Blow, blow, thou winter wind” from Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” (Polish translation by Czesław Miłosz)
- “Sing all a green willow” from Shakespeare’s “Othello (Polish translation by Krystyna Berwińska)
- “How should I your true love know” – Ophelia’s song from Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” (Polish translation by Jerzy Sito)
- “Music to hear” – Sonnet VIII by William Shakespeare (Polish translation by Włodzimierz Słobodnik)
- “Sleep thou”, Titania’s song from Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” (Polish translation by Stanisław Barańczak)
- “Over hill, over dale”, the Fairy’s song from Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” (Polish translation by Stanisław Barańczak)
- “Po co tyle świec nade mną, tyle twarzy” [Why so many candles, so many faces above me], song to words by Bolesław Leśmian
- “Czy pamiętasz jak głowę wynurzyłeś z boru” [Do you remember when your head emerged from the wood] from the poem “Łąka” [The Meadow] by Bolesław Leśmian
- “Nad wodą wielką i czystą” [By a Water Great and Clear], song to words by Adam Mickiewicz
